Meet Our Team

Seth Hurlbert, Owner / Inspector

All my life I have been taking things apart, figuring out what was wrong, repairing it, and putting it back together.  I used to work on everything from small equipment like lubrication injectors and pumps, to air compressors that were larger than a truck. I have done repairs both in my own home and for other people since I was a teenager. So when I needed a change in career, home inspecting seemed like a great fit.

I like doing inspections because I am always meeting new people and learning new things.  Even after 20 years in the business I’m seeing new and interesting things all the time!  The best part of being an inspector is helping my clients really understand the home they are investing in.  Sometimes it’s pristine, and sometimes it’s not, but at least they know what they are getting into.  I enjoy talking with my clients and explaining not only what is found at the inspection, but also how their new home works.  I feel that I am really helping my clients and that my work is important and appreciated.

When I’m not doing inspections you can find me out on the water: I like to canoe and do a bit of fishing on the local waterways.  When I win the lottery I will own my own sailboat again—I used to race, and would love to sail regularly.  I also enjoy taking trips with my family.

Tim Valaike, Inspector

I did not plan to become a home inspector, but the opportunity arose and I took it!  I discovered that I enjoyed doing home inspections, and was good at it. My prior experience working in the home construction industry has provided a knowledge of construction methods and processes and my experience in the IT industry helped me develop skills in logical problem solving, cause and effect, and attention to detail, all of which have been a great value in doing home inspections.

The best part of being a home inspector is meeting new people every day, and helping others to understand the condition of their potential home.  This is often one of the most valuable and important purchasing decisions of their lives, and I’m glad I get to be a part of it.  I also like not having to fix stuff—I just have to identify what is wrong!

When not working, I enjoy hiking, dancing, and photography.  I love being in nature—living in the mountains, watching the wildlife, and going to the beach.  I have an awesome (and large!) family that I enjoy spending time with whenever I can.  I have wonderful parents, great brothers and sisters, and six very special children.

Kevin Bartik, Inspector

Growing up, my father instilled in me two lasting passions: trucks and repairs. I had a wrench in my hand shortly after I was able to walk, “helping” him fix our cars and trucks.  My father always wanted to do things himself, from small repairs around the house to much larger building projects.  When he didn’t know how to do something he sought the information he needed to complete the project safely and correctly.  This habit of excellence was instilled in me, and part of what makes me a good home inspector.  I have worked in several different trades (decks, framing, and roofing to name a few) which has allowed me to expand my skill base and remodel my homes.

I have never been a person that could sit at a desk in an office.  I found home inspection and it has been a great fit for me—my varied background in home improvement provides a solid knowledge base about the homes, and my previous experience in retail has informed my communication skills with clients.  I believe being able to relay valuable information in a professional and knowledgeable way is key to being a great inspector.  My favorite part home inspecting is that I am always learning and seeing new things…and I get to spend all day in my truck!

When I’m not inspecting I like to visit my family in West Virginia and spend time on our beautiful property there.  I am an avid outdoorsman--I love to hunt, fish, off-road, and anything else that I can do outside. My nephew shares this passion, and we get together as often as we can!

About Hurlbert Home Inspection

HHI is owned by Seth Hurlbert and located in the northern Virginia area. We will perform quality Home Inspections anywhere in the Northern Virginia area including the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Loudoun, Warren, Clark, Frederick, and Stafford.

Our goal is to provide all of our customers with a through education about the property in which they are considering investing. In order to do this, we hope that you will accompany us throughout the inspection. We will examine the exterior and interior of the home to check for possible moisture intrusion, deteriorated materials, delayed maintenance and any possibly unsafe conditions. We will explain the maintenance that the home may need immediately and what will be needed to keep it in good condition. We will examine the mechanical systems, such as the heating and cooling, plumbing, and electrical, and check for proper operation. We will describe each of these to let you know what the age and condition of the systems is in and what maintenance is needed. When we have finished the inspection and any questions that you have are answered, a report describing the property and it’s condition will be furnished to you. This report is also available in electronic format. A sample report can be viewed here.

We realize that often things move quickly with real estate transactions. We always try to accommodate your busy schedule with the timing of your inspection. We can often work with you for evening or weekend inspections. Please realize that in order to perform a thorough inspection of the property and provide you with a proper report, the inspection normally takes between two and three hours.

Call us or  select "Schedule Now" from the top menu to schedule your inspection today. We look forward to serving you.
